How to Handle Suspicious Domains
NordStellar’s Domain Squatting feature helps identify suspicious domains that may pose risks, such as impersonation, phishing, or brand misuse. While NordStellar currently does not provide a takedown service, here are possible steps you can take to address detected domains and mitigate potential risks.
Steps to Address Suspicious Domains
1. Analyze Domain Details
Review the information provided by NordStellar, including:
- Registrar: Where the domain is registered.
- WHOIS Data: Registrant details, if available.
- DNS Records: Associated IP addresses or subdomains.
- Website Content: If the domain is live, examine its pages for harmful activity.
2. Evaluate the Potential Risk
- Is the domain hosting phishing or malware?
- Does it mimic your brand or trademarks?
- Could it confuse your customers or damage your reputation?
3. Collect Evidence
- Take screenshots of harmful or infringing content.
- Save WHOIS records and DNS information.
- Record examples of misuse or harm caused by the domain.
4. Report to the Registrar
- Use WHOIS data to identify the domain’s registrar.
- File an abuse complaint through their contact form or email, providing evidence of the issue.
- Highlight any policy violations, such as impersonation or malicious use.
5. Notify the Hosting Provider
- If the domain hosts harmful content, identify the hosting provider (using DNS tools or NordStellar insights).
- Submit a report to the hosting provider with supporting documentation.
6. File a UDRP Complaint
- For domains infringing on trademarks, consider filing a Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (UDRP) complaint. This process may lead to domain transfer or cancellation.
7. Submit a DMCA Takedown Notice
- If the domain uses your copyrighted material (e.g., logos or content), send a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) takedown notice to the registrar or hosting provider.
8. Report Malicious Activity
Report phishing or malware domains to:
- Google Safe Browsing: Submit Report (opens in a new tab)
- Microsoft SmartScreen: Submit Report (opens in a new tab)
- National cybersecurity agencies or anti-phishing organizations.
9. Monitor for Changes
- Continue monitoring the domain through NordStellar for updates to its content, DNS records, or activity.
